Anyone else think it’s funny that budgeting is trendy again?
We’ve always lived pretty close to our means, sometimes a little over but within a budget and have always clipped coupons, did a lot of cooking, shopped for bargains, bought things at walmart if they were comparable and cheaper like personal care products, frozen food, electronics, etc – never had to have top of the line GPS because we were smart enough to realize the $150 one breaks and gets stolen as easily as the $600 model, drive a Hyundai even though we could have afforded a luxury car and took a lot of crap about it, live in a moderate house that has everything we need, but — now all of a sudden the news and shows are flooded with tips on how to save money and it seems like common sense to me. Duh – Starbucks a treat like DairyQueen, not a daily habit – I’m sorry for the sarcasm but I’m just thinking how stupid we are as a society and how easily we allow ourselves to get sucked into bigger better more, more more.
No don’t be sorry. I totally get you. Budgeting just seems like common sense, or so one would think. When people talk about the money gurus like Dave Ramsey and Suze Orman, well it makes me and my mom laugh because they’re just telling you common sense things. They’re not telling you anything new.
It seems that most people don’t save in the good times, that’s when its wise to save so when the bad times come, you will be okay because you had saved. Unfortunately most people don’t save during the good times so when the bad times come for most people they’re pretty bad.
That’s why people end up losing their homes, although I understand there are other reasons to lose their homes but anyways having a financial cushion would have certainly helped them. Its the old tale of the ant and the grasshopper, most people are grasshoppers it seems.
